Kew Recreation Centre is about to undergo an exciting redevelopment to provide the community with a modern, state-of-the-art facility catering to all ages and abilities. The centre is now closed and will remain closed until the redevelopment works are completed, in late 2022.

Your membership with the Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities gives you access to all four recreation centres in Boroondara. This means your health and wellness journey with us doesn’t end here. We have worked with the City of Boroondara to ensure the programming and instructors you are used to will remain as consistent as possible across our other facilities. The three other facilities you have access to as part of your membership are Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre, Boroondara Sports Complex and Ashburton Pool & Recreation Centre,

This web page has been designed to provide an overview of the alternative options available to you.

Below are some FAQs regarding the centre closure.

  • Membership FAQs

What will happen to my membership now Kew Recreation Centre is closed?

Your membership with Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities will remain on free suspension, unless you tell us otherwise. As a member of the Kew Recreation Centre you have and will continue to have, reciprocal access to the other three Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities.

Can I change my mind and come off free suspension at a later date?

Yes you can. We are allowing you flexibility of when you re-activate your Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities membership. There will be no additional re-start charges associated with the re-activation of your membership.

What is happening to Kew swimming lessons?

Swimming Lessons are currently suspended under the direction of the Victorian Chief Medical Officer. With an ever evolving situation, the way we run swimming lessons may be significantly impacted to ensure community safety. Class sizes and the number of people in the pool area may be adjusted under direction from the chief health officer. This has made our original planned transition for Kew swimming lesson families challenging.

However we will make every effort to find the best alternative for your family. If you wish to continue swimming lessons at one of the other Boroondara facilities please complete the enquiry form on the swimming lessons page to register your interest.

What if I do not want to use the other Boroondara Leisure & Aquatic Facilities when Kew Recreation Centre closes?

We will continue to offer free suspension for the expected two year closure period. All memberships will automatically be placed on free suspension, you don’t have to do anything.

Is there a final celebration event?

Prior to COVID-19 we had planned on hosting a farewell event to commemorate Kew Recreation Centre.  Due to social distancing and gathering restrictions this is now not possible.

What will happen to the gym equipment at Kew Recreation Centre when the centre closes?
All furniture, fittings and equipment will be redirected to other Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities. Any items which are unable to be reused will be sold with proceeds going to YMCA Open Doors.

YMCA Swimming Lessons

Swimming Lessons are currently suspended under the direction of the Victorian Chief Medical Officer. We will contact you once lessons are able to restart with details of how to enrol your child.

While we anticipate swimming lessons class sizes will be effected in the future to ensure our program operate CovidSafe, every effort will be made to find the best alternative for you as you finish up your swimming lessons at Kew Recreation Centre.  YMCA Swimming Lessons are available at all three Boroondara facilities; Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre, Boroondara Sports Complex and Ashburton Pool and Recreation Centre. Many of our swim teachers work across all four facilities, so you may see some familiar faces.

To enquire about moving to one of our other centres, please complete the enquiry form on the right.  One of our staff members will then contact you to discuss which option will work best for you.

If these options are not suitable for your circumstances, YMCA Swimming Lessons are also available across other Y-managed aquatic facilities including Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre. To view YMCA’s other locations please visit www.victoria.ymca.org.au/locate

Childcare has not yet returned at the other Boroondara facilities, however when they do reopen every effort will be made to ensure all booking requests are met by rostering additional staff to meet ratio requirements whenever necessary. For more information please see centre links below:
